Legend of Inishcahey
(Inis Cathaigh, Gaelic for Island of the Serpent)
There is mystery where the land meets the sea and adventure
beckons. Seekers throughout the ages have set off to find the
magic in solitude and sea passages, establishing beacons of light
to shine and dance into the world's darkness.
Magical Strings' 10th album returns to Celtic roots with a mystic
sea voyage featuring the family quartet on harp, dulcimer, violin,
'cello and whistles. Capturing the intimacy of live studio performances,
this journey begins with island dances on solo harp and valiha,
then visits ancient Ireland with a dramatic suite about St. Senan's
battle with darkness on Inishcahey. Pam's "Sail Far Away" is a
haunting quest on concertina and strings, while Brittany's fiddle
soars over Brenin's punchy bass lines on an Irish reel. In "Adrift"
Philip and Eugene Friesen set off on uncharted waters with a stunning
improvisation on harp and 'cello. Originally conceived in Ireland,
this exciting new album of eight soul-stirring originals and five
lively traditionals will kindle a fire of warmth for your Yuletide
season.
Reviews:
"If you want an exciting cross-pollination of Irish/World sounds
delivered with freshness, style and panache, look no further.
Legend of Inishcahey is musical manna from heaven." -John O'Regan,
Folk Roots Magazine
"Consistency and lyrical passion have marked their work from
day one and this takes it up a notch. Musicianship, composing,
arranging and passionate execution are at the very highest level
here. Major release in the instrumental music field with strong
Celtic ties. Highly recommended." - Chris Lunn, Victory Music
Review
"I was profoundly moved by 'Legend of Inishcahey'...This CD has
become my treasure." - Kiyoshi Funatsu, Japan's premier acoustic
music distributor
"...You certainly did Inis Cathaigh proud. We reckon that St.
Senan himself would be proud." - Declan Kelleher, Fergus View,
Co. Clare, Ireland
"I am by now accustomed to your own combination of sensitivity
and virtuosity, but the musicianship of Brittany and Brenin is
really remarkable...rare sensitivity and emotional depth. I am
dazzled by your always surprising, always deeply moving union
of traditions, instruments, and styles...And I am wholly drawn
into the sweeping grace of the breathtaking harp air -- the evocation
of an Irish sunset that closes 'Legend of Inishcahey'." - Caleb
Crowell
